How to Upload Photos to Google Photos From a Chromebook

This particular characteristic of Chrome OS has likely been around for quite some fourth dimension. To exist honest, I'm not certain how long users have had access to this option, only I've simply not known it was possible and I tin't believe I've not been using it this whole fourth dimension!

Simply the other day I was going to set a profile pic for a service of some sort (vague, right? I really don't remember what it was for, though!) and there is a pic in my Google Photos I tend to go with when I can't determine on a new profile photo. When I'thousand on my Chromebook, my normal workflow for this is to open up up photos.google.com, search for the photograph, download it locally, then upload information technology to the service.

It's not terribly efficient.

If I were on my phone, after all, when I went to peruse my files, Google Photos would bear witness up along with my other stuff and I could simply select the image I want right so and there instead of a local file.

Since Chrome Bone is now adding Play Files and Linux Files to the files app, I thought but perchance they would include Google Photos among these add together-on locations like to what Android does.

Later searching around for any sign of this happening in the hereafter, I realized it's been under my olfactory organ this whole fourth dimension.

Where Are They?

Ever since Google Photos first launched, you could choose to proceed your photos synced with your Google Drive account alongside your Google Photos account. If your Google Photos were uploaded every bit High Quality (aka – free up to 16MP) and non Full Size, this wouldn't impact your overall Google Drive storage allocation. If they were non uploaded this way, you were in for a rotten surprise as all your pics and videos ate abroad your bachelor Bulldoze space.

I did this for a fleck, but all those older pics and videos were killing my Google Drive space, and so I opted out of the whole sync choice pretty early and never looked back.

Equally it turns out, the option to make your Google Photos visible in your Drive made a render at some point (or again, has been hiding there all along) and all y'all need to do is flip a switch to run into all your Google Photos correct in your Google Drive folders. For Chromebook users, this means all your pics are sitting in a binder called – you lot guessed information technology – Google Photos and are organized in folders by year and month.

Who knew? Well, perhaps some of yous did already, but I most certainly did non and finding this option isn't exactly intuitive.

A Frequent Use Case

If you aren't tracking with me on why this is a big deal, let me give yous a unproblematic scenario as an example. Many times for an article I will grab a snapshot on my Pixel 2 that I want to use as my featured image. Commonly, I take the moving picture, head to photos.google.com, give information technology a few seconds, download the photo I but took and and then re-upload to the site.

You know what would be much simpler? Taking the pic, then uploading direct from my Files app. That's what I want to do and what I now realize I'm fully able to exercise. In the effect you want to do this as well, permit me testify you lot how.

Go Google Photos In The Files App

This honestly couldn't be easier. Get-go, head over to drive.google.com. Make sure yous are logged into the aforementioned Google business relationship you employ for your Google Photos. Click the gear up on the right side and select settings. Scroll down only a fleck and you'll see Create a Google Photos binder. Hit that checkbox, wait but a piffling bit, and y'all'll have a defended Google Photos app correct in your Google Drive sorted by year, month, and date.

What that as well means is Chromebook users will run across the aforementioned folder right there in the Files app next fourth dimension you need to upload or share a photo you recently took on your phone (bold you are using Google Photos on your phone as well). Proceed in mind, this is a 2-way street. Delete pics from these files, they will exist deleted from Google Photos. Google did safeguard this in ane way, however, and full folder deletions will not result in whatever deletions in Google Photos to save yous from that sort of gut-wrencing misery.

The whole affair works so well, too! The image below of my Cubs cup was taken on my Pixel two and in the time it took me to place an image in this post (nearly 30 seconds), information technology was already synced up and ready for me to upload directly from my Files app.

This is the workflow I've been after forever, and I'thousand so happy to share it with anyone who's been in search of this simple, effective, and vivid use Google Photos on a Chromebook.
